Carl Bradley Abbott of Garden City, Missouri, was born to Earl C. and Carrie G. (Cattey) Abbott in Winigan, Missouri on June 20, 1926. He departed this life on Wednesday, January 16 at the age of 86.
Carl grew up on in rural northern Missouri with two brothers, Clyde and Nile, and a sister, Marjorie (Eddy). He went to school in Winigan and high school in Green City, graduating in 1943. He worked at Citizens Bank in Winigan before serving in the U.S. Navy for two years. After the war, Carl returned to Missouri and married Shirley Romine on July 23, 1949. They lived in Winigan where their two children, David Lee and Dianna Beth were born. Carl joined the Garden City Bank as cashier in 1954. He moved his young family to the small town outside of Kansas City where they made their home. After a long and successful career in the banking business, Carl retired as Garden City Bank’s Chairman of the Board in 2001. He and Shirley enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, gardening and traveling. Carl loved woodworking and clockmaking, creating future heirlooms for generations to come. Carl and Shirley were active members of the Garden City Christian Church, where Carl served as a Sunday School teacher and song leader for many years. Carl especially loved the fellowship of the close-knit congregation at his church. Carl was a civic-minded man who believed in supporting the community and those in need. He served on many boards and organizations in Garden City throughout his lifetime, and in later years was a regular volunteer for Friendship Meals. At the heart of his commitment to his community, his congregation and his work was Carl’s love of people. Whether you were family, a friend, an employee, or one of “The Girls” at Old Cedar Inn you knew you could count on a kind word and a genuine smile from Carl. His steadfast faith, quiet generosity, and patient belief in the goodness in people guided his life and will be missed by many. Carl was preceded in death by his wife of over 62 years, Shirley Abbott; his brother, Clyde Abbott; his sister Marjorie Eddy; a daughter, Dianna Abbott and infant grandson, Ryan Abbott. He is survived by his brother, Nile Abbott and wife Reva of Kansas City; his son, David Abbott and wife Brenda, Harrisonville; four grandchildren, Darren Abbott and wife Jodi, Harrisonville, Andrea Abbott, Harrisonville, Eric Abbott and Brad Abbott, both of Garden City; two great-grandchildren, George Abbott and Owen Abbott, both of Harrisonville; former daughter-in-law Becky Abbott; step grandson Jake Barnett; other relatives and many friends.
