Carolyn Hersey

September 23, 1920 — May 10, 2009

Carolyn Marie Hersey of Overland Park, Kansas was born to Clarence and Beulah (Graves) Cessnun on September 23, 1920 in Council Grove, Kansas. Carolyn was the youngest of three children. She grew up with her brothers Archie and Pete on the family farm.
With many lessons learned from life on the farm Carolyn moved to Kansas City. She was employed at the Forum Cafeteria, then later at Sunflower Munitions Plant, Lake City Arsenal and Elko Photographic. In 1950, Carolyn married B.K. Hersey. They raised two children Bennetta and Tom. BK and Carolyn attended Beaumont Baptist Church where Carolyn was baptized. The Hersey?s also were members of Bethany Baptist Church. They were active in mission work for both churches throughout the area. BK and Carolyn?s last church home was New Life Baptist in Peculiar, Missouri.
BK and Carolyn started Empire Construction of Raytown, Missouri in the early 1960?s. Together they built over 65 churches and numerous commercial building in the immediate area. The ministries of the churches and missions they helped build create a legacy that will touch many lives for years to come.
To her friends Carolyn was loyal to a fault. She was ?true blue?. To family she was the Grandma that loved the holiday gatherings. To her children she was the best Mom. She was strong but kind. She taught us to never ever give up and was always there for us, no matter what. Carolyn led by example. She was what every Mom should be.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, BK Hersey; a granddaughter, Cindy Elliott; two brothers, Archie and Pete Cessnun.
She is survived by a son, Tom J. Tobler and wife Karen, Leawood, Kansas; a daughter, Bennetta Elliott and husband John, Peculiar, Missouri; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services were held Thursday, May 14, 2009 the Chapel of Hope Mausoleum at the Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Kanas City, Missouri.
Family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas City Hospice.
