Longtime Missoula, Montana resident, Elsie Welsh Conway died November 15 in Harrisonville, Missouri. She lived in Missoula from 1933 to 1990 when she moved to Missouri to be near her daughter and family. Elsie was born June 27, 1913 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Gustave Carl-Henry and Bertha Reese Krueger. She attended grade and high school in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She furthered her education at Wheaton Christian College in Illinois.
Elsie was married to William (Bill) Welsh for 56 years until his death in 1989. She moved to the Blackfoot Valley in Montana 5 days after her marriage to Bill in 1933. While living in Missoula, she worked at The Montana Mercantile, the School of Journalism at UM, and the US Forest Service Film Library, from which she retired in 1974. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and Beta Sigma Phi. Bill and Elsie also lived in Folger, Alaska where Bill was a bush pilot. After moving to Springfield, Missouri, she worked in the grade schools in the Foster Grandparent Program. Elsie made many trips back to her home town of Steamboat Springs through the years. While visiting in Steamboat she worked in the Harbor Hotel owned by her sister Leona Zuschlag. In later visits she worked in the Laurel Avenue Pre School also owned by her sister Leona. Elsie and her sister Leona enjoyed traveling and traveled extensively through the years. Preceding her in death were her son John William Welsh in 1958, first husband William Mark Welsh in 1989, her sister Leona Krueger Zuschlag in 2000 and her second husband Truman Conway in 1998.
Survivors are daughter Valrie Jane and husband Eddie Martello, granddaughter Jennifer and husband Phil Rogers, and great-grandchildren Brooke and Brodie Rogers, all of Harrisonville, Missouri, as well as a nephew Ed and wife Mary Zuschlag of Denver, Colorado, two great nephews Chris and wife Tracy, daughter Thyme,son Calvin of Stagecoach, Colorado, Matt and wife Rose, daughters Abby and Amber of Auburn, California.
Elsie ashes will be scattered on Mount Morrell near Seeley Lake, Montana.
