Esther Maxine Owens, 100, of Bolivar, formerly of Pleasant Hill, was born January 31, 1915, in Estherville, Iowa, the daughter of Vernal Walter and Florence Gertrude (Brasher) Mills. She departed this life at 7:40 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2015, at her daughter’s home in Bolivar.
At a young age Esther moved with her family to Tacoma, Washington, for a brief time. At the age of 5 Maxine was sent to Springfield, Missouri, to live with her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and John Gee. She was a 1932 Springfield Senior High School graduate. Following high school she was employed as a checker at Ben Harrison’s Model Grocery Stores.
On March 21, 1937, she was united in marriage to Hubert Owens in Lebanon, Missouri. To this union two children were born, Rose Mary and Jerry. Throughout her life she remained a homemaker. Her passions in life were reading the Bible, serving in leadership positions in Southern Baptist churches, sharing products from her garden, and caring for her flowers.
In January of this year she celebrated her centennial birthday in Bolivar with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Jerry on November 30, 1981, and her husband Hubert on April 3, 1989.
She is survived by her daughter Rose Mary Owens of Bolivar, with whom she had lived the last several years; daughter-in-law, Mary Sue Hayden of Farmington, Maine; two grandsons, Mark Shannon Owens and his wife Barbara Gamage Owens of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Frank Owens Hughes of Tumwater, Washington; two great grandsons, Nathaniel Owens and Graham Owens, of Raleigh; two great granddaughters, Kaylee Owens and Julie Owens of Tumwater; her long time caretaker, Rhonda Estep of Urbana, Missouri; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 8, 2015, at the Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home. Dr. James Butterfield will officiate. Interment is in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
