Gene Chandler

January 24, 1923 — November 2, 2017

Harold "Gene" Chandler was born on January 24, 1923 on the family farm south of Creighton, Mo. and there departed this life on November 2, 2017. He was the 5th child born to Roy Albert and Effie Ellen (Gregg) Chandler.

His early education was at Greasy Creek School and he graduated from Creighton High School.

On February 4, 1946 he was united in marriage to Pauline Mae Estep. To this union 3 children were born: Paulette Jean Chandler, Cynthia Lee Firestone, and Glenn Leroy Chandler.

After marrying, he and Pauline made their home on the family farm and were able to live there until their deaths. Farming and caring for Roy and Effie through ill health and their deaths; and later Pauline's mother Mae Estep.

During his life, Gene was always willing to help others and to serve the community. He served on the Dayton Cemetery Board, Parker Cemetery Board, Creighton School Board and the Cass County Zoning Board.

Sports were a particular enjoyment in his life, having played baseball and basketball during his High School years . Later he took great pride in coaching the Creighton Boys Baseball team for a number of years and their winning record.

Throughout his life he was an avid hunter and trapper of rabbits, ducks, geese, deer, coyotes, mink and raccoons. Along with hunting for enjoyment, during the 30's thru the 60's animal skins were a source of income. Many evenings the men congregated for supper and then proceeded out for a long night of coon hunting with their dogs.

Nothing delighted him more than to visit with family and friends, or to have children playing around. Telling stories or reminiscing was a true enjoyment. He will always be remembered as a good man. Always respectful of nature, animals and his fellow man. Always will he be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Effie, his siblings Ruby (Frank) Allbritten, Lura Leona (Chester) Harris, George Isaac (Alice) Chandler, a baby brother dying in infancy, and son-in-law Paul T Firestone.
