Harold Eugene Self, age 80, of Laurie, MO passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach. He was born August 14, 1935 in Syracuse, MO, a son of the late Joseph Harold Self and Sis (Homan) Self-Buchholz.
Gene graduated from Harrisonville High School in 1953 and was an active participant in many school activities. He enjoyed camping with his friends and had a special love for his nieces and nephews.
He generously donated his time to Masonic organizations, achieving leadership roles, including past master of Cass Lodge #147. Gene was a past commander of American Legion Post #42, volunteer Fire Chief of Harrisonville, member of Elks Lodge #2705, Laurie, and a veteran of the United States Air Force.
After retiring to the Lake of the Ozarks, a favorite pastime was enjoying the action on the lake and people watching. To those that knew Gene well, they realized he was a “cowboy at heart”.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Harold Buchholz, and sisters, Bobbie Self and Shirley Ann Schroer.
He is survived by his loving companion of 50 years, Lois Jeanne Hipple, of the home, nephews Ron Schroer and wife, Tammy, Kansas City, MO & Bryan Schroer and wife, Marla, Liberty, MO, niece Diane Reynolds and husband, John, La Grange, KY, brother-in-law, Ron Schroer and wife, Evie, Liberty MO, 7 great-nieces and nephews; special friend, Lane Hammond and other relative and many friends.
He was a friend who was always a friend.
A Masonic Service was held Monday, August 24, 2015 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri with the funeral to follow.
