Hannelore E. Carr

August 25, 1936 — November 1, 2014

Hannelore E. “Lore” Carr, 78, of Independence, was born August 25, 1936, in Giessen, Germany, the daughter of Franz and Marie (Richber) Schmidt. She departed this life peacefully at 6:20 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at the Corner Brook Place care center, Kansas City.
Lore’s lifelong passion was sewing, which she began doing for family members as a child. She completed formal tailor training in Giessen on April 23, 1955. Lore was a tailor for Peter’s Men’s Clothing in Independence and Kuppenheimer Men’s Clothiers in Kansas City, before retiring in 1990.
On August 14, 1964 she was united in marriage to Dennis Clifford in Landstuhl, Germany. They had two daughters Christel and Deborah, who were her greatest treasures. After growing up in Germany, she and Dennis, who served in the US Army for 22 years, moved extensively, living in many locations including Fort Lewis in Washington, Fort Hamilton in New York and Fort Greely in Alaska.
On February 14, 1991, she was united in marriage to Robert “Opa” Carr in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on December 19, 2013.
She was an avid gardener with an amazing green thumb. One of her favorite flowers were gladiolas. She was also a very resourceful, meticulous and creative person.
Lore was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings in Germany, leaving only a brother Hans Schmidt, and two sisters, Christa Schmidt-Preckel and Inge Freitag surviving.
She is also survived by: two daughters, Christel (and Fiancé, Karl Ehlers) Reeder of Independence and Deborah (and husband, Jeff) Humphrey of Evergreen, Colorado; two step children, Rob Carr and Lori Beth (and husband, Jim) Reynolds, both of Independence, and two step grandchildren, Lori Beth’s children Rebecca Brown and Nathaniel Conrad. Rebecca and Nathaniel were one of the highlights of her life, as she greatly enjoyed being their Oma (German for grandmother).
Funeral services were held Friday, November 7, 2014, at the Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers are Jeff Humphrey, Kark Ehlers, Jim Reynolds and Nathaniel Conrad.
