James Jim Clayton Welborn, 90, passed away November 17, 2006 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
He was born September 12, 1916 in Peculiar, Missouri to parents Jake and Kate (Ewers) Welborn. The youngest of five children, Jim grew up in Peculiar and graduated from Peculiar High School in 1934.
After high school, Jim embarked on a career in the grocery business that spanned over 60 years. He was first employed with the Harrisonville A&P in Harrisonville, Missouri. Jim married Mildred Ament on June 6, 1942 and at the beginning of their marriage, the couple ran dairy cattle on a farm outside of Harrisonville.
Jim returned to Peculiar in 1945 and was the owner and manager of Welborns United Super until 1960. He then owned and managed a Standard Oil Filling Station from 1960 to 1964. In 1964, Jim and his family relocated to Drexel, Missouri where he purchased Rieders Market and founded Welborns Food Center. He ran the store until 1979, when he sold the business to his oldest son. Jim remained active in the business as an advisor until he retired to John Knox Village in 2002.
He was a member of the Drexel Baptist Church and was active in the Drexel Lions Club. Jim was also honored for his 50 years of membership in the Grand River Masonic Lodge. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed bird hunting and raising beef cattle during his retirement.
Jim was an astute business man and an expert in spoiling grandchildren. His wit and sense of humor, as well as his reputation as a prankster, was appreciated during his life and will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Charles Welborn, Virginia Pihl, and Alice Collins, and his wife, Mildred. Jim is survived by his children, son James Dale and wife Carol; son Kenneth Lee and wife, Jean; daughter, Janet Elaine and husband, Jess; grandchildren, James Anthony Welborn, Kristen Kyle Welborn and Lauren Kate Welborn; two great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
