Jay Hartzler, 84 of Harrisonville Missouri died October 6, 2012 at Adrian Manor, Adrian Missouri. He was born December 30, 1927 in Harrisonville to Ora Jay (OJ) and Priscilla (Yoder) Hartzler.
Jay Hartzler grew up in rural Harrisonville, Missouri and was a member of the 1946 graduating class of Harrisonville High School. He attended Hesston College in Hesston, Kansas in 1946-1947, during which time he sang in the Hesston College Men’s Chorus and Acapella Chorus. He completed two years of volunteer service as an assistant in surgery in Elkart, Indiana in 1953-1954.
Jay married Dorothy Hershey on August 3, 1956 and they established their home in Harrisonville where he farmed, worked as a building contractor, and developed a successful career in life insurance sales. Together with his sons, he started a farm equipment dealership in 1977 and continued to work there until shortly before his death. Jay was one of the founders of Harrisonville Community Church and was an active part of the prayer ministry until his illness prevented his attendance at services. Jay enjoyed helping people who were challenged in their life circumstances. Through the years, many people were provided jobs and other forms of support because of his desire to bless others.
Besides his parents, Jay was preceded in death by his sister Alta.
Jay is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hartzler, Adrian Manor; his children; Kathleen and Don Miller, Granby Colorado; Lowell and Vicky Hartzler, Harrisonville; Douglas and Becky Hartzler, Harrisonville; His siblings, Allen and Pauline Hartzler, Blanch and Morris Hershberger, Harrisonville; his grandchildren; David Miller, Granby, Colorado; Nathan& Faith Hartzler, Springfield, Missouri; Matthew & Kathryn Hartzler, Greenwood, Missouri; Levi Miller, Goleta, California; Andrew Hartzler, Harrisonville and Tiffany Hartzler, Harrisonville; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Harrisonville Community Church with burial in the Clearfork Cemetery near Garden City, Missouri.
Family received friends on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.
Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Harrisonville Christian School.
