Jerry Gene Burton was born September 18, 1941 to C.R. “Bunt” Burton and Golda Drury Burton in Butler, Missouri and passed away January 8, 2013 at home surrounded by his family.
Jerry served his country by enlisting in the Army and served his community as a member of the Dayton Cemetery Board. He was a member of New Covenant Fellowship Church. He worked many years as a heavy equipment operator and Shop Foreman for Cass County Road and Bridge Department. This strong and gentle man was a father and grandfather to many. If you didn’t have either, he would gladly fill that void. If you spent more than ten minutes with him, you would likely be considered family and friend.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Shirley J. Burton, their children and step children; Dan Burton of Ferryville, Wisconsin, Lyle Burton of Butler, David Helverson of Independence, Allen Helverson of Independence, Mary Helverson Young of Harrisonville, Debi Harrill (Chad) of Adrian, Skip Schrock of Garden City, Greg Schrock (Penny) of Holts Summit, and Jeanna Schrock Jackson (John) of Adrian. He leaves behind brothers and sisters Leroy “Tony” Burton, Charles “Peanut” Burton, Sandra Keck, Marcella Vogeler, Dennis Burton, John Burton, Jim Burton, the mother of his children, Juanice Penny Burton, and many family and friends. He had twenty grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Seth Aaron Burton, two brothers, Herb Burton and Ronald “Jack” Burton.
“A father without the obligation, a teacher without books, a friend without judgment, and an eager hunting buddy left, fighting all the way. You will be missed but never forgotten.” - D.V.H.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri with burial in the Dayton Cemetery.
Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice.
