John Joseph “Jack” Murphy, 91, of Greenwood, was born May 9, 1923, in Yonkers, New York, the son of John J. Murphy Sr. and Mary Agnes (McCormick) Murphy. He departed this life at 07:10 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015, at his home surrounded with love and family.
Jack was a graduate of Gorton High School in Yonkers, New York. Following high school Jack entered the service enlisting in the United States Navy where he trained recruits. After the war, Jack attended King's College in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania, graduating in June 1950. That same month Jack married the love of his life, Marion Ruth Connors. The couple moved to Kansas City in 1960 where Jack worked as an administrative supervisor for Western Electric until his retirement in 1985. Jack then pursued his second greatest love, golf. As an avid golfer Jack spent much of his time playing and analyzing the sport even working as a marshal for Country Creek Golf Course. Jack was a devotee to Our Lady and to praying the holy rosary.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jean Mary Murphy.
He is survived by his wife, Marion; two sons, John Joseph (and June) Murphy, and Kevin (and Linda) Murphy of Lee’s Summit; three daughters, Mary Pat (and John) Scott, Colleen Murphy of Greenwood and Carol (and Kent) Kennedy of Lee’s Summit; 15 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; other relatives; and friends.
A private Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the St. Bridget Catholic Church. Interment with full military honors by the United State Navy and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3118 Honor Guard were held in the Floral Hills East Cemetery, Lee’s Summit.
Casket bearers were John Murphy, Kevin Murphy, Kane Murphy, Connor Murphy, Kent Kennedy, Mike West, Thomas Murphy, and Steven Murphy.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Knights of Columbus Council #13113 and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
