Kiyoko "Kay" Mathews, 79, of Holden, Missouri, formerly of Kansas City, departed this life on Monday, November 7, 2011 in her home surrounded with love and family after a long battle with cancer.
Kay was born May 27, 1932 in Yokosuka, Japan, the daughter of Hisataro Tsutsumi and Huru Shibuya. She was united in marriage to Raymond M. Mathews on October 19th, 1954 in Yokohoma, Japan and moved to the Kansas City area in 1955 where she started a family and began her working career in various retail, food and hotel service industries.
Kay was a loving mother who instilled hard work and family values. She struggled through many of lifes challenges, but always remained resilient and the corner stone of her family. She will be missed.
Kay is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by three sons Larry and wife Michelle Mathews of Basehor, Kansas, Jim Mathews of Seymour, Tennessee, and Robert and wife Earlina Mathews of Holden; five grandchildren Robert Mathews, Jr. of Holden, Chistopher Mathews of Belton, Missouri, Michelle Mathews of Springfield, Missouri, Tristan and Allison Mathews of Seymour; and two sisters Kazue and Tomiko of Yokosuka, Japan.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2011, at the funeral home. Reverend Jan Todd of the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers are Larry Mathews, Jim Mathews, Robert Mathews, Christopher Mathews, Tristan Mathews, and Robert Mathews.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
