Lucile Gebhardt

May 25, 1917 — May 9, 2011

"VIEW VIDEO"J. Lucile Davis Gebhardt of Archie, Missouri was born May 25, 1917 the eldest daughter of John Carlisle and Elizabeth K. Davis in Anson, Kansas. Given the news of her failing health, loved ones gathered to comfort her over Mother’s Day weekend. In the early morning hours of May 9, and in the company of family in her home, Lucile peacefully departed this life and joined her parents and sister, Dorothy May Davis Brown, in heaven.
Early in life Lucile discovered her talent and love for music. She began singing duets with her sister and craved it so much she went on to become a soloist, director of the junior choir in church, and a vocalist for special music in funerals, church services, weddings, and in the community. Her love of music was so deep that she requested to listen to Gospel and Barbershop music during her last days with us.
After high school, Lucile studied teaching at Central Missouri State and taught school, some of which took place in a one-room schoolhouse. Later, she left teaching to marry George William (Billy) Gebhardt in May of 1940 at the First Baptist Church in Archie, Missouri. Over the years, the couple worked tirelessly to build their farm.
Lucile was also known for her delicious cooking. She showcased her pies and cinnamon rolls in local restaurants – and as the tale goes, passersby were lured in by the aroma. Lucile was delighted to share her culinary knowledge with others. Sometimes when teaching people a recipe like cobbler, she would say (much to the consternation of someone wanting exact ingredients), “well, put in what you like!” While some of us have tried, with great effort, to replicate their favorite recipes, the outcome is never as good as hers.
Perhaps the most important cooking contribution or outcome of her cooking was the way she used it to gather her family together. Regardless of the occasion, everything was warmed by her presence, grace and delightful food. With the food and company as the centerpieces, we have collected a lifetime of memories.
Lucile is survived by her husband, Billy Gebhardt and three children: Judy Pickle, Jack Gebhardt and wife Priscilla, and Vicki Baker and husband James. Her extended family includes: three grandchildren: Trey Pickle and wife Jennifer St. Cyr, Tori Berndt and husband Derek, and Zach Gebhardt, and two great-grand children: Evan and Ivy Berndt.
Lucile was an energetic, loving and joyful woman. The grief of her passing is only surpassed by our memory; her life and spirit will forever live within our hearts.
Funeral Services were held Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the First Baptist Church, Archie, MO with burial in the Floral Hills Cemetery, Kansas City, MO.
