Mrs. Velma Lucille Sexson of Harrisonville, Missouri was born January 7, 1936 near Harrisonville the daughter of Walter Lee and Erma Faye (Blazer) Smith. She departed this life on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 75 years, 1 month and 9 days. In July of 1952 Lucille was united in marriage to Delmer Cecil Ayler in Garden City, Missouri and later married Melvin Dale Sexson on April 15, 1971 in Garden City. Lucille was employed as a waitress at several restaurants in Garden City, Harrisonville and Creighton, Missouri. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Garden City. Lucille enjoyed going to garage sales, scrap booking, playing pitch, going to the boats, painting on quilts and doing embroidery. She will be remembered by her family as being, strong willed, full of faith, a hard worker, an excellent cook and being devoted to her family. Lucille had lived in Holden, Missouri and Garden City before moving to Harrisonville in 1999. Besides her parents, Lucille was preceded in death by her 2nd, husband, Melvin on February 22, 1977; two infant sons, Gary and Larry Ayler; a daughter, Beverly Ayler Copeland on July 31, 2008; two grandchildren, Stacy Cowan and Michael Dale Ayler; a sister, Lois Marie Smith. Lucille is survived by two sons, Chester Ayler and Ronnie Ayler both of Harrisonville, Missouri; four daughters, Debbie Ayler, Independence, Missouri, Janet Henderson, Harrisonville, Missouri, Carol Bandy and husband, Don, Creighton, Missouri, Cheryl Cowan and husband, David, Harrisonville, Missouri; two step-daughters, Phyllis Schliem and husband, Curtis, Ballard, Mo. and Sandra VanWinkle, Springfield, Mo.; thirteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; several step- grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Schrock; Nixa, Missouri; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 21, 2011 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri with burial in the Garden City Cemetery, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas City Hospice House.
