M.E. 'Gene' Buerge

Marvin Eugene (Gene) Buerge was born on September 25, 1917 to Frank and Annie (Willan) Buerge in Jasper, Missouri and died at home in Garden City, Missouri, on August 25, 2011.
In 1937 Gene married Goldie Jantz and from this union had two children, Sonya and Scott. They moved to Cass County, Missouri, in 1947 in order to find a Mennonite Church. Their Mennonite church, White Hall, was closing in Jasper, Missouri.
Gene served as Sunday School Superintendent, church treasurer and Mission Board member at White Hall Mennonite Church. After joining Sycamore Grove Mennonite Church he served as Sunday school teacher, Church Council member, Elder Board member, and trustee.
In April of 1976 Gene married Beulah Dawson in Garden City, Missouri.
In Cass County he served as treasurer of Index Township Board.
Gene was a farmer and raised registered Angus cattle. In 1960 he built Garden City Elevator that he operated for 35-years, and also bought East Lynne Elevator. During that time he developed Buerge Estates Addition and Buerge Country Estates. In 1971 Gene and his son, Scott, purchased Metz Banking Company in Metz, Missouri, where he served as Chairman of the Board. In the late 1970’s he developed Garden City South housing addition.
Preceding him in death was his father, mother, daughter, Sonya, and three brothers, Bob, Paul and Orville.
Surviving are his wife of the home, Beulah, son, Scott and wife, Charlotte, of Nevada, Missouri, stepdaughter, Debra Gilmore and husband, Larry, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, stepson Michael Dawson and wife, Judy, of Springfield, Missouri, seven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family is suggesting donations to Sycamore Grove Mennonite Church.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 29, 2011 at the Sycamore Grove Mennonite Church near Garden City with burial in the Clearfork Cemetery.
Family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 28, 2001 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City.
