Margaret Hannah Shelton, of Harrisonville, Missouri, was born January 20, 1922 in Bates County, near Butler, Missouri, the daughter of Thomas Laurence and Jessie Fay (Rinehart) Rich. She departed this life Thursday, September 29, 2005, peacefully at her daughter's home in Shawnee, Kansas at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 9 days.
Margaret attended elementary and high school in Ballard, Missouri. She graduated from Central Missouri State, Warrensburg, Missouri with a teaching degree.
On January 24, 1942, Margaret was united in marriage to Leroy Edgar Shelton in Harrisonville, Missouri.
Margaret started substitute teaching in 1965 in the Harrisonville, Missouri School District and continued teaching until her retirement in 1980. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Harrisonville and loved serving as a Sunday School teacher as well as in many other activities in the church. Margaret and her family lived in Butler, Missouri until 1962 when they made their home in Harrisonville until her death.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Shelton on August 23, 1989; four brothers, Jack, Stuart, William and Robert Rich; one sister, Ruth Rich and an infant sister.
She is survived by her children, Sylvia Mills and husband Fred, San Antonio, Texas, Rich Shelton and Gloria Brewer and husband Glenn all of, Harrisonville, Missouri, Sandra Reed and husband Bill, Shawnee, Kansas and Mark Shelton and wife Dana, Lenexa, Kansas; 11 grandchildren, Jeff, Kevin and Damon Mills, April Stecher, Nichole Haar, William, Shannon and Whitney Reed, Ashley, Megan and Madison Shelton; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois Hendrickson, Butler, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 3, 2005 at the First Baptist Church, Harrisonville, Missouri with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler, Missouri. Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
