Mary Katheryne Surber, of Garden City, Missouri, was born March 5, 1919, near Garden City, the daughter of Dean Roysten and Lorah Mae (Allen) Surber. She departed this life on Tuesday October 1, 2013, at Golden Years Care Center, Harrisonville, Missouri at the age of 94 years, 6 months and 25 days.
Mary attended all twelve (12) years at Garden City School, graduating from Garden City High School in 1937. She was active in softball, baseball and basketball.
Mary was baptized in 1931 at the Garden City Christian Church by Rev. Banks and was a lifelong member there.
Mary was employed at the Lee Goode Hatchery in Garden City from 1937 – 1945. She then went to work at Commerce Trust in Kansas City, Missouri until 1949. She began working for Foster Lumber Company in 1951 in Kansas City, moving to Boulder, Colorado when the corporate office relocated there in 1968. She retired in 1986, after 35 years with the company, now known as Diamond Lumber, and remained in Boulder for another ten (10) years before returning to the Garden City family farm in 1995.
Mary was a Junior Member of the Index Auxiliary; active in the Boulder Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she was a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship and had many friends there; she was an active member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club in Boulder, Colorado; and her hobbies included bowling, dancing, playing bridge and pitch, and attending Colorado University men’s basketball games where she supported CU unless Mizzou was the opponent.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Clara Elizabeth Surber, her brother, Robert Dean Surber, and her sister-in-law, Shirley Lucille (Gwinner) Surber.
She is survived by her nephews, Robert Jr. (Debbie) Surber, of Harrisonville, Missouri, Richard “Dick” Surber of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Ron (Denise) Surber of Harrisonville, Missouri, Rod (Gayla) Surber of Lone Jack, Missouri, and her niece, Rev. Candice K. (Bill) Brown of Des Moines, Iowa; great nephews and great nieces as well as great-great nephews and great-great nieces and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri. Burial is in the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City, Missouri.
The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Garden City Christian Church or to Serenity Hospice.
