Mary Leona (Cathey) Akins, of Harrisonville, Missouri was born November 5, 1925 near Urich, Missouri in the community of Mayesburg, the daughter of James Otho and Maude Rachel (Parker) Cathey. She departed this life on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at the Lee's Summit Medical Center, Lee's summit, Missouri surrounded by her daughters and immersed in the love of the Lord at the age of 91 years and 2 months.
On November 20, 1944, Mary was united in marriage to Achel James (AJ) Akins in Mound City, Kansas. To this union were born 3 daughters.
Mary graduated from Ballard High School in 1944. She was employed as an in home nurse maid, a school teacher during WWII and factory work following the war, but soon after became a full time housewife and mother.
Mary remained in her own home after the death of AJ and lived there until her death. She was a Christian and joined the First Baptist Church in Harrisonville in 1972, where she served as a Children's Sunday School Teacher, in Women's Missionary Union, choir member and many other duties. Mary was willing to shout her love for the Lord from the Mountaintops. She would often share her faith with complete strangers that she chanced to meet. She was looking forward to be reuniting with AJ in Heaven and the opportunity to gaze upon the face of Jesus.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, AJ Akins on October 14, 2013; a granddaughter, Shannon; sisters, Thelma Foster, Irene Thomas and Marie Williams.
Mary is survived by her three daughters, Judy K. Welsh, Janice (Jan) L. Street both of Harrisonville, Missouri, and Jessica A. Vinzant, Olathe, Kansas; five grandchildren, David, Angela, Jason, Eryn, and Jared; six great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Elijah, Jozlyn, Mackenzie, Achel, and Alexis; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the First Baptist Church, Harrisonville, Missouri with burial in the Dayton Cemetery near Garden City, Missouri.
Family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Final arrangements entrusted to Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.
