April 23, 1938 — February 17, 2015

Melvin “Mike” Sumner, 76, Peculiar, MO passed away on February 17, 2015 due to complications of kidney failure.
Mike was born on April 23, 1938 in Portland, MI and graduated from Portland High School. He joined the Air Force in 1955 and was stationed at Holloman AFB where he worked as a jet mechanic. It was there he met and fell in love with Mabel Cosper. They were married in 1961 and moved to Missouri where he found work in construction until he started his career in telecommunications. He retired from Sprint after 32 years of service.
Mike had many hobbies including hunting, fishing, camping, building remote control airplanes, wood-working and spending time with family. He was an ordained Baptist Deacon, Teacher and Missionary. He was always willing to help a neighbor fix their roof, mend their siding, build a fence or whatever needed to be done. He was well known as a practical joker but mostly as an unselfish servant, dedicated father and Christian. He has a legacy of hammer marks locally and around the country where he performed his mission work in Nevada, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota and Canada.
