Mollie Louise Eckart Sigler of Garden City was reunited with God and loved ones on January 24, 2012. She was 96.
Mollie was born June 16, 1915 in Bethel, KS, the daughter of J. Fred and Cora Keller Walton. She married Claire Eckart on July 7, 1934 in Kansas City, KS. That union lasted 53 years.
During World War II, Mollie, with two young daughters in tow, joined her husband in San Diego, CA to help the war effort in an airplane factory. She was a riveter. More than just patriotism, Mollie was there to support her husband. It was a characteristic that she would often demonstrate. After the war the family returned to the Midwest and purchased a small farm near Garden City. Though Mollie was more accustomed to city life, she embraced life on the farm and worked alongside Claire in the fields, the garden and the milk barn. When Scoutmaster Claire’s campout was rained out, it was Mollie who showed up with hot chocolate and a big breakfast for all the scouts. When the hey crews were in the fields working up an appetite, Mollie was toiling in the kitchen to make sure they had a big hot lunch at precisely noon.
Lord knows where she found the time, but Mollie also had a very artistic side. She studied oil painting, ceramics, and poetry. She found beauty everywhere and in ordinary things. A piece of moss would become a grassy field, an orange peel a beautiful rose. And in her hands a simple hollyhock bloom and a toothpick became a twirling ballerina.
After Claire’s passing, Mollie found love again in her late 80’s. In 2001, she was crowned Queen of the Austin Bean Eatin’. She shared the throne with King Ozro “Bud” Sigler. They hit it off right away and we’re married later that year. That union lasted 4 years.
More than anything or anybody, Mollie loved the Lord. She demonstrated that love throughout her life, teaching Sunday School in Dayton and Garden City. Even late in life when hearing and eyesight had faded, Mollie would lead the family in prayer with a strong, clear and unwavering voice.
She also instilled Christian values in her grandchildren. “Do you know the Lord?” she’d ask each of them. “Do you know Jesus as your personal savior?” she inquired. Even though they’d always answer “yes”, she’d ask the question every now and again. Grandma’s seem to instinctively know when to ask the right questions. Mollie is survived by a daughter Shirley Burton (Jerry) of Garden City, a son James Eckart (Stella) of Saint Petersburg, FL, a son-in-law Tony Burton of Harrisonville, ten grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren and many friends. She is preceded in death by husband Claire Eckart (1987), husband “Bud” Sigler (2005), daughter Dorothy Louise Burton (2010) , son-in-law Sonny Schrock (1981) and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri. Burial will be in the Garden City, Cemetery, Garden City, Missouri.
The family will receive friends Friday, January 27, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
