Monta Crawford Smith

March 26, 1921 — April 13, 2015

Monta Virginia Crawford Smith passed peacefully into the next life on April 13, 2015 in Keokuk, IA at the age of 94.
Monta is survived by her children, Tony (Donna) Smith of Warsaw, Ginny Schabacker of Sugar Land, Texas, John (Linda) Smith of Hamilton, and Patty (Greg) Lefler of Keokuk; and a sister, Pat Pasley of Hot Springs, Arkansas. She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Frank Junior Smith, her parents, Bessie and Bill Crawford, three brothers, Dale (Madeline), Donald and Dean, and one son-in-law, Bob Schabacker.
Monta was born on March 26, 1921 in Creighton, MO to Bill and Bessie Crawford. She graduated from Creighton High School in 1939 and later attended a business college in Kansas City, MO. After meeting him in passing on a street in Kansas City and a long, transcontinental courtship, she married Frank Smith, a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps in 1945. Over 16 years, the couple welcomed four children into their home.
She was involved in the local Girl Scout chapters, the United Presbyterian Church, of which she was a lifetime member, and Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and could always be relied upon to scold them if they didn't promptly write their thank you cards. She made a phenomenal apple pie, fitting because she was known as Granny Smith. Her handmade presents were always full of care, and visitors to her home were greeted with the question, "So, what do you know?"
The funeral service was held Thursday, April 16 at DeJong-Greaves Funeral Home in Keokuk, Iowa with Chaplin Jim Lunder of HCI Hospice officiating. Burial in Keokuk National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family suggested donations to HCI Hospice at hospiceofcentraliowa.org.
