Opal Lorrine Reed, 97, of Pleasant Hill, was born January 13, 1917, in Moorhead, Iowa, the daughter of Leander Clark and Laurine Katherine (Madison) White. She departed this life at 1:37 p.m., Thursday, February 27, 2014, at the Crown Care Center in Harrisonville surrounded with love and family.
On November 3, 1938, she was united in marriage to Lester Boyd Reed in South Sioux City, Nebraska. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1965.
Opal had been employed as a seamstress for the Pleasant Hill Garment Factory for many years. Later she worked for Remington Arms in Lake City, a plastics factory in Blue Springs, and as a cook at Boweilers restaurant. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. She was also an active member and officer of the Senior Citizens Congress of Cass County. Her hobbies included quilting and knitting. She most enjoyed helping others, by volunteering and assisting the elderly. She volunteered as a cook for several years with the Pleasant Hill Meals on Wheels.
Opal was also preceded in death by one son Leon Reed; one daughter Maryland Lyons; one granddaughter Tammy D. Byrd; seven brothers Loy White, Arthur White, Harvey White, Kay White, Clark White, Louis White, and Merrill White; two sisters Mable Smith, and Irma Cave.
She is survived by one son Leland (and Donna) Reed of Pleasant Hill; two daughters Diana Wilmoth of Pleasant Hill, and Adena (and Jess) Elam of Kingsport, Tennessee; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; one sister Ruth Hausmann of Cherokee, Iowa; other relatives; and many friends.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Evangelist Eugene Jenkins will officiate.
Graveside services and interment will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014, in the Nigh Cemetery, Lamar, Missouri. Casket bearers are Darren Reed, Kent Reed, Eric Reed, Leon Reed, Jack Wilmoth, and Jacob Wilmoth. Honorary casket bearers are Jimmy Barrow, Gary Elam, Jess Elam, Robert Lyons, Morgan Miller, and Jeffrey Wilmoth.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Crossroads Hospice and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
