Pearl Genevia Bates

March 23, 1916 — December 6, 2010

Mrs. Pearl Genevia Bates, Creighton, Missouri, was born March 23, 1916 in Humansville, Missouri the daughter of Charles Thomas and Minnie Matilda Ernest) Akins. She departed this life Monday, December 6, 2010 at the Crown Care Center, Harrisonville at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 13 days.
On November 22, 1938, Pearl was united in marriage to Lucien Ballard Bates in Butler, Missouri.
Pearl was a homemaker. She was also a cook for the Raymore-Peculiar School district from 1961-1970 and later was a home bound nurse for people in the area. She was a member of the Creighton Christian Church. Pearl had a huge heart and enjoyed taking care of people? and that involved lots of cooking. Her vegetable soup comforted many and her home made blackberry cobbler was always the first dessert to disappear at a dinner. You could always count on her to bring a pie (or two, or three) if a dessert was needed Every spring she would go out and pick strawberries and blackberries (she continued to do this into her mid-80s)? and from these she made pints of preserves that she would send home with friends and family Pearl never let her handicap slow her down: she liked to garden, and took great pride at out-doing others by cutting corn off the cob faster than anyone... with her one hand.
She enjoyed camping and traveling with Pete, Ray and Judy. Pearl had some legendary fishing stories that she loved to share and she was also quite the rock collector.... with a very impressive collection of perfectly round rocks that she had found over the years. Pearl was very close with her brothers and sisters: on any given Friday or Saturday night, there was usually a ""Pitch"" party going on at someone's house. Most of the time the whole gang would be there with their husbands and wives and they would always have a lot of fun together.
Pearl was a highly devoted grandmother to Kim and Gregg, and in later years enjoyed her great-grandchildren: William, Greta and Elias.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lucien on August 28, 1975; four brothers, Homer, Ralph, Gearl and Roy Akins and three sisters, Opal, Bonnie, and Marie.
Pearl is survived by her son, Ray Bates, Creighton, Missouri; a grandson, Gregg Bates and wife Christy, Springfield, Missouri; a granddaughter, Kim Gardenhire and husband Gary, Lee?s Summit, Missouri; three great-grandchildren, Will, Greta and Eli; a brother, A.J. Akins, Harrisonville, Missouri; a sister, Faye Gibb, Blue Springs, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 11, 2010 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri with burial in the Dayton Cemetery near Garden City, Missouri.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Creighton Christian Church Memorial Fund.
