Ralph “Gene” Eugene Davis of Garden City, Missouri passed away Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the age of 81. He was born north of Garden City, Missouri on September 27, 1929 to Charles and Iva (Blanton) Davis. He had a brother, Charles, and two sisters, Louise Davidson and Irene Lane. On October 26th, 1949 he married Madeline Green of Archie, Missouri, and in 1950 their son Larry Eugene was born. A small business owner deeply involved in his community, Gene was part owner of Garden City Custom Dozing with Herb Burton, founded in 1969. Many of the basements, ponds, and lakes in the area were dug by the two of them. Gene’s civic service began in 1970 when he was elected to his first term as Mayor of Garden City. In 1976, he was asked to fill in on the Garden City City Council, which was followed by three consecutive terms on the Board of Aldermen. He served a second term as Mayor in 1984-1985. For many years, he was caretaker of the Panther Creek Ranch. Gene had many friends and was beloved by his family. He was a genuinely kind and honest man who gave selflessly to his town and his loved ones. He enjoyed smoking his pipe, taking care of animals, working outdoors, cutting wood with his son, and spending time with his family. Gene was the sort of person you could rely on absolutely. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles and sister Irene. He is survived by his wife, Madeline; his son Larry, daughter-in-law Marilyn of Garden City, Missouri; granddaughter Amanda Davis and great-granddaughter Iva Hoskins of Stillwater, Oklahoma; granddaughter Stacy Orf, her husband Tim, and great-granddaughter Madeline of Greenwood, Missouri; as well as sister Louise Davidson of Lenexa, Kansas.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri with a private family burial in the Garden City Cemetery.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, July 27, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the Village Hospice John Knox.
