Robert Dean Surber Sr.

Robert Dean Surber, Sr. of Garden City, MO was born July 4, 1927, the son of Dean Roysten Surber and Lorah Mae (Allen) Surber near Garden City, Missouri. He departed this life on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Kansas City, MO at the age of 82 years, 10 months and 21 days.
Robert graduated from Garden City High School in 1945. After a tenure in the United States Army Service, he returned home. On December 1, 1949, Robert was united in marriage to Shirley Lucille Gwinner in Calhoun, MO. To this union were born 5 children: Robert, Candice, Richard, Ronald and Rodney. Shortly after marriage, Robert began farming a 160 acre farm Northwest of Garden City, MO where he raised Polled Shorthorn cattle, Duroc hogs and Shropshire sheep as well as engaging in row crop farming.
Robert and Shirley were members of the Garden City First Christian Church, and in 1961, they moved their membership to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Harrisonville, MO. Robert was an Army veteran and an American Legion member. He was a member of the National Farmer?s Organization, serving as Cass County President and MO State Secretary for many years. Robert was on the Garden City Cemetery Board serving a tenure as President. He also served several years as a Democratic committeeman in Cass County.
Robert?s church family and church life were very important to him. For over 35 years he set up the nativity manger scene in the church yard, which has been an important part of the Christmas season in Harrisonville for many years.
He enjoyed baseball, including the Kansas City Blues, Athletics and Royals. He enjoyed many Royals opening days and 4th of July birthday celebrations with family and friends at Kauffman Stadium.
Robert enjoyed vacations to Oklahoma to visit the land on which his father homesteaded, trips to Boulder, CO to visit his sister Mary Katheryne and bus tours to Branson, MO with church family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dean Roysten and Lorah Mae (Allen) Surber and a sister, Clara Elizabeth Surber.
Robert is survived by his wife of 60+ years, Shirley; his children Robert, Jr. and wife Debbie of Harrisonville, MO, Candice and husband Bill Brown of Des Moines, IA, Richard of Pleasant Hill, MO, Ronald and wife Denise of Harrisonville, MO, & Rodney and wife Gayla of Lone Jack, MO; a sister Mary Katheryne of Garden City, MO; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 29, 2010 at the First Christian Church, Harrisonville, Missouri with burial in the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City, Missouri.
Family suggest that memorial contributions can be made to the First Christian Church, Harrisonville, Missouri.
