Dearly beloved husband and father Robert J. Fuller went to be with Jesus on Monday July 18, 2011 at St. Joseph Medical Center, in Kansas City, Missouri. His wife Ruby lives on in Harrisonville, MO.
Born in Camp, Arkansas on December 2, 1926, Robert was a great example of why his generation is called the “greatest generation”. From humble beginnings in the back-hills of Arkansas during the great depression, to a 101st Airborne paratrooper WWII vet with boots on the ground in Germany, father of 5, he eventually retired from a major telecom company as one of the first digitally-trained central office technicians. (For years after he retired they’d call him to troubleshoot problems that they just couldn’t figure out.)
As a very young boy, he met the only love of his life, Ruby Louise Cochran, whom he married in Camp Arkansas on April 14, 1947 after his return from the war. From that point on, he was the family’s hero. He set his family’s standards high early on for honesty and drive, and taught his family that life is really about people, not the things one has or the work one does. He was an incredibly bright and determined man.
Over the years, their loving union brought five children into the world that survive Robert; eldest daughter Neta and husband Frank Zitnik of Omaha NE, second daughter Jessie and her husband Steven Clark of Leawood KS, eldest son Gary and wife Jean of San Diego CA, youngest daughter Joy and husband Dan Svec of Des Moines IA, and youngest son Robert and companion Dori of Osceola IA. Robert and Ruby were blessed with six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Robert is also survived by his sister Irene Butler of Kansas City, and many other family members and friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother Myrtle and father Milas, and brothers Alfred, Oliver, and Roy Fuller.
Robert had many skills and gifts that he shared willingly at every opportunity (even if you didn’t ask). He was a generous, honest, hard-working man that loved Jesus and served his fellow man in every way possible. His walk with God started as a child and seasoned over his life in a unwavering commitment and service to the Masons and Eastern Star organizations. Robert was baptized in his 70’s, as a visible restatement of his deep faith.
He would truly give you the shirt off his back if you needed it (unless maybe it was a square dancer’s shirt!). He was not a man to trifle with, but he was the best friend anyone could ever have. He could build or fix anything, and was the go-to guy for anyone who needed advice on almost anything. He could be tough as nails, but felt things deeply too. Robert made the world a better place for everyone who knew him.
Even at 84, he was computer-savvy, used a smart-phone like a teen-ager, and loved to figure out anything that most other people couldn’t. Always eager to learn and wanting to stay busy, he was looking into getting a locksmith certification.
