Roy Douglas Barker

Roy Douglas Barker (better known as Bop Bop) 78, Harrisonville, Mo., passed away July 6, 2009.
Doug was born in Carroll County, Tennessee on January 20, 1931 to Hafford & Alva Barker. Doug grew up in McKenzie, Tennessee. July 1950, he joined the US Navy, in November of 1951 he found out that he was going to be stationed in San Diego, California, on December 1,1951 he married Willie Grace Mann, she said ?you are not going to California without me.? He served on the USS Hector until May 1954.
After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Doug and family returned to Tennessee. Doug had been a machinist on the USS Hector. The Bendix Corporation in Kansas City had a trade school, so in the fall of 1954 they moved to Martin City, MO. so he could attend school. In 1955 Bendix offered Doug a job as a machinist, much to Willies disliking they became residents of Missouri. They lived in Martin City until the tornado of 1957, where they lost everything. They moved to LaCygne, KS for a few weeks and then to Drexel, Missouri. With 37 years of service, Doug retired from Bendix in 1992; he never took one sick day in 37 years. In 2004 due to failing health Doug moved to Crown Care Center in Harrisonville where he lived until his passing.
Doug was very active in the Drexel community; he served on the school board, the zoning board and as a deacon in the Methodist Church.
Doug Barker was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. There were so many things that he loved to do. He loved being at every activity his grand children were involved in, he loved his cars, he taught his grand-daughter to drive, he loved playing cards at the pool hall in Drexel every Saturday, loved traveling with Doc, Rose, Alice and Leo and he loved driving Willie wherever she wanted to go, he just loved life.
Doug is survived by his two children, Cherry Mickelson and husband Kent of Freeman, MO., Jimmy Barker and wife Victoria of Pleasant Hill, MO., Grandchildren include; Cory Mickelson of Freeman, MO., Melissa Mickelson of Leawood, KS., Jerod Mickelson of Raymore, MO., Blake Barker of Pleasant Hill, MO., Brandon Huerter of Pleasant Hill, MO., & Sarah Taylor of Harrisonville, MO. There are 3 great grandchildren.
Doug leaves his older brother John David Barker and wife Robbie of McKenzie, Tennessee.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents Hafford & Alva Barker and his beloved wife Willie Grace.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Crown Care Center and the Oaks Transportation Service for all the loving care and support they provided the past 4 ½ years. Many thanks go to his friends that took him to the boats, played cards and just took him for a car ride and lunch. We would also like to express our gratitude to Crossroads Hospice.
Cremation. A Memorial service were held Sunday, July 12, 2009 at the Dickey Funeral Home with inurnment in the Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, Missouri.
