Mrs. Ruby Jewel Friend, of Urich, Missouri, was born August 9, 1919 in Chautauqua, Kansas the daughter of William Edward and Lillie Mae (Buckner) Pennell. She departed this life Saturday, January 1, 2011 at her home at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 22 days.
On April 5, 1937, Ruby was united in marriage Charles Henry ?Chub? Friend in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Ruby was employed for 25 years at the Kearney County Hospital, Lakin, Kansas starting in the kitchen, then helping out ?on the floor? and then later was a Nurse?s Aide. She became a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints shortly after her marriage in 1937. From childhood days of riding wild horses to later years exploring ghost towns in Arizona, Ruby was full of the spirit of adventure. Camping, fishing, and exploring the country were all shared from the west coast states through the Rocky Mountains, into the plains and further to the falls of the Niagra. Ruby touched many lives and made people better for it.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Charles ?Chub? Friend; four brothers, Raymond, Russell, Roy and Ray ?Ted? Pennell; three sisters, Rena Fields, Ruth and Rose ?Gladys? Pennell.
She is survived by two sons, Charles Friend, Neil Friend and wife Mayola all of Urich, Missouri; a daughter, Sharon Logan and husband Dennis, Advance, North Carolina; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 7, 2011 at the Community Center, Chautauqua, Kansas with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Chautauqua.
Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Golden Valley Hospital Foundation c/o the Outpatient Surgery Department and Recovery Room, Clinton, Missouri.
