Rufus Augustus Kenagy was born November 17, 1939 to Harlie and Neva Kenagy at Garden City, Mo. He passed away from a massive heart attack while on an anniversary trip to the Smoky Mts. to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary. He passed away at Murfreesboro, Tn. on August 13, 2015 at the age of 75.
Dad grew up on a farm near Garden City, Mo. He enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. He attended school at Garden City.
He was joined in marriage to me, Edith King, at Parnell, Iowa on August 16, 1960. 4 children were born to this union. We spent our first year of married life in Parnell, Iowa, then moved back to Garden City, Mo. to farm with his Dad for a couple years. Then we moved to a farm near Harrisonville where we as children remember growing up.
He was converted at an early age and attended church at Sycamore Grove Mennonite Church at Garden City. In 1976 we started attending church at Bethany Mennonite Church in Rich Hill, Mo. Dad and Mother rededicated their lives to the Lord and on May 1, 1977 they together with their 2 oldest children, Debra and Curtis were baptized. Dad had many struggles in his life, but lately we had noticed a softening and want to commit him to God who loves us and does all things well.
Dad was a lover of singing and in his younger married years he enjoyed singing with a barbershop quartet. Later we as a family remember many beautiful times singing together. We remember Dad as a very generous person. He loved helping his children out and always enjoyed giving his grandchildren gifts at Christmas.
A highlight our family enjoyed was a camping trip together on their 50th wedding anniversary. He mentioned that several times as a bright spot in his life.
Left to mourn his passing are 3 sons, Curtis and wife Barbara, Bloomfield, Iowa; Larry and wife Joleen, Barron, Wisconsin; Brent and wife Marianne, Jamesport, Mo; and 1 daughter Debra and husband Rock Dirks, Jamesport, Mo; 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; 4 brothers, Marvin and wife Judith, Carlsbad, NM; Roger and wife MaryJane, Ironton, Mo; Carroll and wife Bootsie, Clakamas, Or; Lester and wife Karen, Carthage, Mo and 1 brother-in-law, Kenneth and wife Penny, Sarasota, Fl.
