S. Lamarr Smith

S. LaMarr Smith, 95, of Pleasant Hill, formerly of Raytown and Blue Springs, was born, December 9, 1923, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Sharron and Glysna Smith. He departed this life, Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at the Lee’s Summit Medical Center.

LaMarr was a 1942 Topeka, Kansas High School graduate later earning a Bachelor’s degree from the Kansas State University.

He was a United States Army veteran serving in the European Theater of Operations including France, Czechoslovakia, and Germany.

On December 21, 1947, he was united in marriage to Margery Louise Edwards in Kansas City, Missouri. She preceded him in death in November 2016.

LaMarr had been employed as a Structural Engineer for the Chicago Santa Fe Railroad and later for Kansas City Southern Railroad. He and Margery loved working in their yard, and had traveled the world extensively. He had been a member of both the Raytown Baptist church and the Noland Road Baptist Church and was currently attending the Big Creek Baptist Church in Pleasant Hill. He was also a member of the Missouri Professional Engineers and the Kodak Cameral Club.

LaMarr was also preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Marilyn Dorsey and Barbara McCoy.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Diana Smith of Pleasant Hill; 4 grandchildren, Christina L. Smith of St. Joseph, Jennifer M. (and Ben) Row of Wichita, Tyler Wisdom and Stephen Umfleet, both of Dallas Texas; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 25, 2019, at the funeral home. Reverend James Beckner officiated. Private burial was in the Floral Hills Cemetery, Kansas City.

Visitation was held one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Pleasant Hill Lay-Clergy Council and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
