Samuel James York, Garden City, Missouri, was born July 14, 1931, near Strasburg, Missouri., the son of Jessie Elvice and Clara Birdie (Hanna) York. He departed this life on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Vitas Hospice Care, Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 82 years, 4 months, and 16 days.
On July 28, 1949, Sam enlisted in the United States Army. During a fierce enemy engagement, the tank he was driving, was hit by enemy fire. Sam rescued all of his injured comrades from the burning tank, and was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his heroic act performed during a combat battle in Korea.
On July 24, 1953, Sam was united in marriage to Betty Ruth Wright in Holden, Missouri. No children were born to this marriage, but Uncle Sam and Aunt Betty took great delight in participating in the lives of their many nieces and nephews.
Sam was employed as a rock hauler for Green Quarries in Carrollton, Missouri. He enjoyed scratch-off tickets, going to the boats, fishing, talking and shooting the breeze with friends and family. Sam was known for his infectious laugh.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death, by his wife, Betty, on January 31, 1995; brothers, Johnny York and Delbert York; sisters, Mary (York) Sechrest, Clara (York) Clapper, Ruby (York) Gudde, and Florence (York) Collins.
Sam is survived by his Caretakers who are his Niece Cindy and husband, Jeff Bathgate, Garden City, Missouri, Great Niece, Angie Bathgate, Garden City, Missouri, Two Great Nephews, Adam Bathgate and wife Jennifer, Creighton, Missouri, and Aaron Bathgate, Garden City, Missouri; Two Great-Great Nephews, Josten and Braden, and One Great-Great Niece Serenity. A Brother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law, Calvin and Melva Wright, Independence, Missouri; Two Sister-in-Laws, Peggy Jamison, Wellsville, Kansas, and Dixie Wright, Garden City, Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews, including greats and great-greats, and other relatives and friends.
A Memorial Graveside Service was held Monday, December 9, 2013 at the Medford Cemetery near Holden, Missouri.
