Hazel Lucille “Tootie” Scavuzzo, 83, of Harrisonville, Missouri, was born August 16, 1929, near Harrisonville, Missouri, the daughter of Orange Lathrop and Maude (Hammontree) Lathrop. She departed this life on Friday, August 17, 2012, at the Kansas City Hospice House, surrounded by her loving family.
A lifelong area resident, Tootie was a 1948 graduate of Harrisonville High School where she had played basketball and been the school’s first Homecoming Queen. Shortly after graduation, she and Salvatore Scavuzzo were married on August 4, 1948. They celebrated 64 years together this year.
Tootie was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for over 50 years. She was highly regarded for her excellent cooking and baking, and she loved entertaining family and friends. Tootie also loved to travel, and she and Salvatore were fortunate enough to visit many places throughout the world.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, four brothers, and baby grandson, Gian-Carlo Scavuzzo. She is survived by her adoring husband, Salvatore Scavuzzo, son and daughter-in-law Mark and Lydia Scavuzzo, son Greg Scavuzzo, grandchildren Danielle Scavuzzo and Salvatore Scavuzzo, and many nieces and nephews.
It is impossible to pretend that one so special can be summed-up in a few short paragraphs. To her husband, kids and grandkids, Tootie was the best wife and Mom and the greatest Grandma in the world. She was tough; she was caring; she was loving; she was genuine; she was beautiful; and she was classy. She is irreplaceable and will be deeply missed forever.
