Twanitta Barnes, of Harrisonville, Missouri was born December 13, 1918 on a farm south of Columbus, Kansas the daughter of Chester A. and Flossie M. (Wall) Garrett. She departed this life on Monday, June 16, 2014 at Golden Years Care Services, Harrisonville at the age of 95 years, 6 months and 3 days.
On August 4, 1936, Twanitta was united in marriage to Norman Wilmer Barnes in Baxter Springs, Kansas.
Twanitta was employed as a seamstress for 11 years at Pettet Manufacturing in Miami, Oklahoma where she sewed airline dust mops until her retirement in 1979. In recent years, arthritis kept her from her favorite hobby, sewing. Twanitta was known for her creative sewing ability. Besides prom gowns, she made clothing for her daughter, 2 granddaughters and for great-grandchildren and countless others. Twanitta also made numerous hand quilted quilts. For the past 25 years, she was a member of the First Christian Church, Harrisonville.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Norman Barnes; two sisters, Rhoda Pyle and Pat Sears.
Twanitta is survived by her daughter, Carole Carey, Harrisonville, Missouri; two granddaughters, Tela Gough and Shelley Jansen and husband Steve; four great-grandchildren, Sarah Cummings and husband Heath, Eli Gough and wife Sylvia, Anna Cole and fiancé Thomas Ponder and Leah Gough; four great-great-grandchildren, Carter Cole, Lucas, Kaitlyn and Heath Cummings.
Although it’s difficult to sum up 95 years of a life well lived in just a few words, Twanitta was known for her spunk, sense of humor and her love for her grandchildren. She often shared funny stories about life as she saw it and about her granddaughters as they were growing up, as well as her great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Twanitta was a source of strength, an inspiration and a joy to those who cared for her. She will be greatly missed.
Graveside services and interment were held Friday, June 20, 2014 at the Greenlawn Cemetery near Columbus, Kansas.
Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association Regional Office, 6800 W. 93rd Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66212.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.
