Velma Joyce Jones

Mrs. Velma Joyce Jones of Harrisonville, Missouri was born June 29, 1921 in Urich, Missouri the daughter of Elmer Josiah and Ina Mae (Billings) Nelson. She departed this life Sunday, November 4, 2007 at Crown Care Center, Harrisonville at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 5 days.
On September 16, 1942, Joyce was united in marriage to Gilbert Asbury Jones Jr. in Chicago, Illinois. Joyce and her family lived in Chicago before moving back to Harrisonville in 1947.
Joyce was employed at the Grace Company, Belton, Missouri in children's clothing and was shipping supervisor upon her retirement in 1979. Earlier, she was employed at Time Life Magazine and Fortune Magazine in Chicago, Illinois from 1939 until 1945. She was a member of the Harrisonville First Baptist Church for over 50 years and was recently a member of Abiding Love Baptist Church, Harrisonville Senior Citizens, the Business and Professional Women's Club where she was voted women of the year for 1978 1979 and volunteered as a Pink Lady for the Cass Medical Center Auxiliary.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, G.A. on September 1, 2003; her daughter, Judith Ann Williams on July 5, 1983; a brother, Fred M. Nelson; three sisters, Bessie Mae Metzger, Kathleen Marti and Jessie Davenport.
She is survived by her daughter, Gail L. Burris and husband, Gary, Manning, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Gregory Burris and wife, Stephanie, Charlotte, North Carolina; Garrett Burris, Kansas City, Missouri; Lynette Williams, Kansas City, Missouri; Craig Williams and wife, Vicki, Branson, Missouri; two great-granddaughters, Katelyn and Abigail Burris; special friends, Margaret Graves and Lawrence and Alma Dell Armstrong all of Harrisonville, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Novmeber 9, 2007 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville with burial in the Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville.
