Wayne was born January 21, 1934 in Danbury, NE, the son of Gordon L. and Bertha Ethel Suess Darling. After graduating from Wheeling High School in 1951 he moved with his family to Freeman, MO, and started working at a filling station in Harrisonville. In May 1952 a patron of the filling station mentioned a ranch in Colorado needed ranch-hands. The next morning Wayne was on the road to the Rockies. He worked on the ranch near Steamboat Springs, CO, for two summers.
In March 1956 Wayne was drafted into the Navy. While on leave he and Priscilla Ann Middleton were married at the Methodist Church in Garden City, MO, on June 23, 1956. Wayne completed basic training in San Diego and received orders for the Navy Base in Kodiak Island, AK. Priscilla joined him there in September. The next year in August their daughter, Carla, was born at the Navy Base hospital. After Wayne’s discharge in October 1957, the family moved to Peculiar, MO, where he and Priscilla lived until 2012. Wayne was a member of the Peculiar United Methodist Church.
In 1965 Wayne started his own company, Darling Floor Service, capitalizing on his previous experience working at a couple of hardwood floor companies. He was the sole operator for 40 years. Wayne’s reputation for honesty, integrity and high-quality work was known throughout many counties in the area. In September 1960 son, Gary Wayne, was born.
Wayne was an avid fisherman, even making his own lures, and quail and deer hunter. He never forgot his first bird dog, Queenie, saying there was never another as good as she. Many evenings, Saturdays and Sunday afternoons were spent at Peculiar Lake, Montrose, at the Middleton farm fishing or hunting. After retiring Wayne enjoyed going to their farm in Garden City, MO. He built ponds, 4-wheeler paths and cut wood. He also raised and sold rabbits for many years. His grandchildren, Josh and Amelia, loved to go to the farm with him to fish, ride the 4-wheeler and play with the rabbits. He shared his knowledge of trees, plants and animals with them and anyone who visited him at the farm.
Preceding Wayne in death were his son, Gary Wayne, who passed at age 8, parents, Gordon and Ethel Darling, and brother, Earl Darling.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 58 years, Priscilla, daughter Carla Denise Teague and husband Michael, grandchildren Joshua Wayne Teague (Justinn) and Amelia Lanet Eisenlohr (Danny), two great grandchildren, Ayden Wayne and Lia Alexandra, his sister, Betty Brown, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
