Charles D. 'Peanut' Burton

March 19, 1938 — June 9, 2016

Charles Dean “Peanut” Burton, the fourth son of Golda (Drury) and C.R. “Bunt” Burton, was born March 19, 1938 near Dayton, MO. He departed this life June 9, 2016 at the Missouri Veterans Home, Warrensburg, MO.
Peanut attended Dayton and Choctaw schools and had numerous jobs before entering the Army in 1961. He was stationed at Fort Eustis in VA where he was a light truck driver. After an honorable discharge in 1967, he was employed at Lake City Armory. Charles married Shirley Byers on November 8, 1968. They settled in Independence, MO and raised two girls, Sheryl and Sharla. Through the years they enjoyed their small acreage with many horses, dogs and cats.
In 1971, Charles began his career at the United States Post Office as a letter carrier at the North Kansas City, MO post branch. He retired in 1992.
For 30 years he used vacation days to work at the American Royal Livestock Show and Rodeo where he met many celebrities including one of his favorites, Faith Hill.
Peanut loved to hunt, fish, go bowling, pitch horseshoes and take his mother to Bingo. He was active in 4-H and spent a lot of time at horseshows. He loved to travel!
He returned to work at Wal-Mart in the Lawn and Garden Center from 1999-2010.
Charles is preceded in death by his wife Shirley, his parents Golda and Bunt, four brothers Leroy “Tony”, Herb, Ronald “Jack” and Jerry.
He is survived by his daughters Sheryl Maupin (Bill) Independence and Sharla Burton (James) Odessa, two sisters Sandra Keck, Garden City, Marcella Vogeler, Garden City, three brothers Denny Burton, Clinton, John Burton, Urich, Jim Burton, Garden City, Granddaughters Ashley Maxwell and Alia Maupin, Grandson Jesse Maupin and Great Grandson Mason Maupin, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 13, 2016 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri.
Graveside service were held Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at the Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens, Independence, Missouri.
Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home, Warrensburg, Missouri.
