Donald L. Bathgate, 96, of Garden City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, in Raymore, Missouri, surrounded by his loving wife, three sons, and niece.

Donald was born on June 15, 1929, in Kidder, Missouri, to James and Mary Bathgate. He spent his early years in the Kidder and Hamilton areas, where he developed a strong work ethic and deep sense of family—values that would guide him throughout his life.

In 1948 Don graduated from high school in Hamilton, Missouri, and a few short years later was drafted to serve his country during the Korean War. In 1951, he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps and was sent to boot camp before being deployed overseas to the 38th parallel. There, he courageously served in active combat during a difficult and defining time in history.

As the conflict began to wind down, Don was given the opportunity to return home after many months abroad—a chance he eagerly accepted. Upon returning to the United States, he was stationed in Pocatello, Idaho, where he completed the remainder of his military service. Before his discharge, Don was even offered the opportunity to choose an embassy assignment anywhere in the world. True to his character and devotion to family, he declined, knowing his place was at home caring for his mother, who had been widowed the same year he entered the service.

Throughout his time in the military, Don maintained a loving correspondence with Patricia “Patsy” Connor. After returning home, the two were married on a beautiful summer day, July 11, 1954. This July would have marked 72 years of marriage—a testament to their enduring love and partnership.

In March of 1955, Don began his career with Honeywell, where he worked faithfully for 36 years until his retirement in 1991. His dedication, reliability, and strong work ethic were evident throughout his career and reflected the same commitment he showed in every aspect of his life.

Together, Don and Pat built a life centered on family. They welcomed three sons: Jeffrey, Greg, and Kerry Don and in March of 1964, the family settled in Garden City, MO, purchasing the home that would remain at the heart of their lives for over six decades.

Don took great pride in his home and rarely left a project undone. A skilled craftsman with a passion for woodworking, he remodeled nearly every inch of the house over the years— transforming the kitchen, opening living spaces, and renovating bedrooms, attic, and bath. His handiwork and attention to detail are evident throughout the home and in the many pieces he lovingly created for family and friends. Those who received one of his creations hold them as treasured keepsakes.

Don had many interests, including a deep love of sports and strong support for the local Sherwood teams. His dedication to the community was recognized when he was honored with a surprise award and plaque at a home football game. He also enjoyed traveling with Pat, exploring destinations such as Mexico, Canada, and Hawaii. Whether camping, hiking, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, Don embraced every adventure. No matter where he traveled, however, he always found his way back to one of his favorite places—his garden, which he faithfully tended each year. He never met a stranger and truly loved visiting with people.

Above all else, Don was a devoted husband, father, and family man. He lived a life marked by hard work, kindness, and unwavering love for those around him. His legacy lives on in the home he built, the family he cherished, and the many lives he touched.

Donald is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia (Conner) Bathgate; his three sons, Jeff (Cindy), Greg (Kelly), and Kerry (Patty); 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.
