Eleanor Virginia (Jones) Courtney of Harrisonville, Missouri was born December 7, 1930 in Stony Point, New York the daughter of Howard Taft and Sophia (Jones) Jones. She departed this life on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at Wilshire of Lakewood, Lee?s Summit, Missouri at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 15 days.
On March 25, 1949, Eleanor was united in marriage to James E. Courtney Sr. at West Point Military Chapel, West Point, New York.
Eleanor was employed as a security visitor control person for the United States Department of Energy in Kansas City, Missouri for 30 years until her retirement on September 29, 1995. She accepted Christ as her Savior on April 13, 1942 and was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church, Harrisonville. Eleanor served faithfully as the church organist for the past 45 years, She was a member of the Atomic Energy Commission and had served as a judge for the Cass County Election Board. Eleanor was very patriotic and enjoyed her family, music and was an avid NASCAR and racing fan. She had lived in Garden City, Missouri since 1952 before moving to Harrisonville.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Darla Renee Pulliam and a great-grandson, Champ Samuel Pulliam. She is survived by three sons, James E. Courtney Jr. Latour, Missouri, Douglas Courtney and Matthew T. Courtney and wife, Darla all of Garden City, Missouri; four daughters, Judy Crossley and husband, James, Denise Pulliam and husband, Darrel, Joyce E. Hern and husband, Paul all of Lee?s Summit, Missouri, Susan Pulliam, Garden City, Missouri; sixteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Sandra Dailey, Garden City, Missouri; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at the United Methodist Church, Harrisonvile, Missouri. Burial is at the Orient Cemetery, Harrisoville, Missouri.
