Mrs. Elsie May Akins of Garden City, Missouri was born September 6, 1915 in Wayside, Kansas the daughter of Glenn Sylvester and Blanche Alda (Orr) Merriman. She departed this life on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at Adrian Manor Nursing Home, Adrian, Missouri at the age of 94 years, 9 months and 24 days.
On December 23, 1930, Elsie was united in marriage to Elmer Akins in Harrisonville, Missouri.
Elsie was employed as a seamstress for the Garden City Garment Factory until her retirement. She also had been employed at several nursing homes in the area and at the John Dale Schrock Restaurant in Garden City. She was a member of the Heartland Baptist Fellowship, Harrisonville, Missouri, the United Garment Worker Union and had served as a local steward. She was a loving mother and grandmother and enjoyed working, her garden and quilting. Elsie had lived near Dayton, Missouri before moving to Garden City in 1952.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer on May 11, 1971, two sisters, Beulah Sherwood and Launa Call.
She is survived by two sons, Bud Akins and wife, Glenda, Stockton, Missouri, Butch Akins and wife, Ruth, Creighton, Missouri; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Mildred Barnett. Loveland, Colorado, Nadine Brewer, Wichita, Kansas; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 3, 2010 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri with burial at the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City, Missouri.
