Helen Fay (Spitler) Shackelford

Helen Fay Shackelford (Spitler), age 76, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on August 30, 2025, in Independence, Missouri.

Born on December 28, 1948, in Belton, Missouri, Helen was the daughter of John and Helen Spitler. She grew up surrounded by a large family and was the youngest of six siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Jimmy, Charles, Danny, Erma Jean, and John Robert.

At the age of 41, Helen made the courageous decision to return to school—becoming the first in her family to pursue higher education. Her determination led her to earn both a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master'of Science Counseling in Psychology from Avila College. This achievement stood as a testament to her resilience and commitment to personal growth.

Helen worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor to abused children for years, which she found to be challenging and rewarding.

Helen shared 57 devoted years of marriage with her husband, Michael Shackelford. Together they built a loving home and raised four children: Jamey Shackelford of Independence, Missouri; Tammy Shackelford and her partner Dennis Danner of Blue Springs, Missouri; Jeremy Shackelford and his partner Joyce Kirk of Orrick, Missouri; and Amy Shackelford of Independence, Missouri.

She was a proud grandmother to Damian Danner of Blue Springs, Missouri; Cheyanne Fischer of Grain Valley, Missouri; Julian Danner of Blue Springs, Missouri; and a great granddaughter Olivia Wright of Orrick, Missouri. Helen was also preceded in death by her grandson Sean Fischer.

Helen had a lifelong love for reading that began in childhood and continued throughout her life. She had a passion for writing short stories and poems. She received various awards and acknowledgements for her creations.

She found joy in expressing herself through arts and crafts—sewing Halloween costumes for her grandchildren with care and creativity, quilting intricate patterns, cross-stitching thoughtful designs, crocheting warm keepsakes, and tending lovingly to her flower gardens.

Known for her honesty and courage, Helen lived with integrity and strength. She had a deep affection for animals and delighted in spoiling her beloved fur babies.

Helen’s life will be honored by family at a private graveside service. She will be laid to rest at Orient Cemetery in Harrisonville, MO.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
