Joan Frances Hawkins

Joan Frances (Maloney) Hawkins, age 82, passed away, peacefully, August 5, 2025, at home in Harrisonville, Missouri, surrounded by her family.

Joan was born on March 5, 1943, to Edward Joseph and Hazel Marie (Cooley) Maloney. After graduating from Lillis High School in 1960, Joan worked at Continental Insurance Company at the Centennial Building in Kansas City, Missouri, where she met the love of her life, Richard Terry Hawkins. Joan and Terry married in May 1966.

Joan’s greatest joy was her family. She raised three children on the outskirts of Harrisonville, where she instilled in them a love of the natural world and respect for all living beings. Joan was a kinkeeper; she maintained and cherished strong connections with her extended family and friends. For decades, Joan and Terry hosted an annual 4th of July picnic at their home.

Joan delighted in her flower and vegetable gardens, and she held a special place in her heart for animals. Joan had an open-door policy for the wandering dogs and cats that found their way to her doorstep. If their owner could not be found, she adopted them as pets or fostered them until they could be placed in a forever home.

Joan was the president of the local chapter of the Good Bears Club, which donated stuffed bears to hospitals and children’s groups. She actively volunteered at her children’s schools. Joan attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and volunteered in their sewing group. Her infectious smile, laughter, and ability to make everyone feel special will be missed by all who knew her.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Edward, William, Bernard, and Glen Maloney; and her sisters, Virginia Maloney and Joyce Dujakovich. She is survived by her devoted husband Terry Hawkins and their children, April (Bob Sailler), Jennifer Hawkins (Jay Shick), and Brian Hawkins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to any local animal shelter.
