Joyce Marie Roach

Joyce Marie Roach, 90, of Kansas City, Missouri, and formerly of Harrisonville, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2023, at St. Luke’s North Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

Joyce was born June 1, 1932, near Garden City, Missouri, to Ralph and Dorothy Schindler. She grew up on her family’s farm near LaTour, Missouri. As a child, Joyce participated in 4-H and enjoyed going on car rides with her family. She graduated from LaTour School in 1950 and ranked second in her class. After graduating, she briefly worked at a hotel on the Harrisonville square.

On Dec. 26, 1950, Joyce married Estle Roach. They settled on a farm northeast of Harrisonville, Missouri. There, they built and operated a Grade A dairy and raised their four children, Mickey, Debi, Roger and Holly. While living on the farm, Joyce milked cows, fed calves, tended a large garden and canned and preserved garden harvests. She also served as a 4-H leader and participated in Missouri Farm Bureau.

In the early 1980s, Joyce and Estle retired to Harrisonville. During retirement, Joyce enjoyed creating dozens of beautiful quilts, traveling, walking, planting and caring for her flowers, playing bingo, volunteering at the community thrift shop and participating in Cass County Republicans.

Before moving to Kansas City in 2006, Joyce was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Harrisonville, where she quilted every week with a group of ladies, participated in United Methodist Women, taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir.

Joyce was an excellent cook. Her specialties included butterhorn rolls, chicken and noodles, fried chicken, pork chops and pie. She enjoyed playing cards and board games, and she was a fan of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Joyce prioritized spending time with her family. She hosted countless family holiday gatherings and birthday parties. She enjoyed outings with her grandchildren — drives through town; stops at the park to feed the geese or a shop to get ice cream treats; visits to Powell Gardens; and trips down thrill hill where she’d tell us, “Let’s go down this hill fast!”

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Estle; son Roger Roach; granddaughter Rachel Johnson Janous; and brother Jerry Schindler. She’ll be missed by her surviving family: son Mickey Roach and his wife, Marie; daughter Debi Johnson and her husband, Larry; daughter Holly Sanitate and her husband, Frank; grandson Kit Johnson and his wife, Molly; grandson-in-law Brandon Janous; granddaughter Alice Roach; granddaughter Danielle Hemme and her husband, Alex; great-grandchildren Luke, Ava, Elle, Teddy, Hadley, Cooper, Macklin, Gatlin and Weston; brother Ronnie Schindler; and many other family members and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri. Prior to the funeral on May 25, the family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Garden City Cemetery in Garden City, Missouri.

Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice and sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box 432, Harrisonville, Missouri 64701.
