Joyce Ann (Hufnagel) Walton, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family and the memories of a life well lived.
Born on July 31, 1935, in Lenox, Iowa, Joyce was the beloved daughter of Ralph and Irene Gillespie. She grew up during a time that shaped a generation known for its strength, resilience, and unwavering work ethic—qualities she carried with her throughout her life.
In 1958, Joyce married Orlo Eugene "Chuck" Walton in Miami, Oklahoma. Together they built a family that became the greatest joy and purpose of her life.
For more than three decades, Joyce built a respected career in the restaurant industry at two of Kansas City's most renowned steakhouses, The Golden Ox and The Hereford House. She took great pride in her work and was known for her tireless work ethic, dependability, and genuine kindness. Through the years she formed countless friendships with coworkers and guests alike, touching lives with her warm smile and caring spirit.
To those who knew her best, Joyce wasn't defined by the places she worked or the years she lived, but by the love she gave so freely, the strength with which she faced life's challenges, and the unwavering devotion she had for her family. While Joyce worked hard, it was her family that always held her heart. She treasured every opportunity to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether gathered around the dinner table, celebrating holidays, or simply enjoying one another's company, those moments became the memories she cherished most.
Family was always more important to Joyce than the circumstances of life. She believed that love, forgiveness, and simply being together mattered most a value she quietly demonstrated throughout her life. Her greatest joy came not from material things, but from seeing her family together, sharing laughter, making memories, and enjoying one another's company.
Joyce also knew how to enjoy life's simple pleasures. She loved spending time with friends, trying her luck on the slot machines at the casino boats, playing online games, and working word searches. She belonged to a generation that lived life without apology, and anyone who knew Joyce can still picture her relaxing with a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, or her favorite cocktail, cigarette in hand, sharing stories and laughter. Those little moments were unmistakably, Joyce, and they are memories her family and friends will forever hold dear.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Irene Gillespie; her beloved son, Douglas Walton, who passed away on June 5, 2008; and Orlo Eugene "Chuck" Walton, the father of her children, who passed away on May 11, 2010. Although their marriage ended years earlier, they remained lifelong friends and continued to share family holidays, celebrations, and treasured time together with their children and grandchildren.
She is lovingly survived by her sister, Judy Landrum; her sons, Brian Walton and his wife, Tina, and Blaine Walton; her daughter, Jessie Hoskins and her husband, John Hoskins; seven cherished grandchildren: Marissa Walton, Marc Walton, Angie Mills, Jake Hoskins, Chris Hoskins, Billy Hoskins, and Nick Walton; fifteen great-grandchildren; along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
Although we grieve her passing, we find comfort in knowing that the love she gave, the values she instilled, and the countless memories she created will live on for generations to come. Her quiet strength, enduring resilience, unmistakable wit, and unconditional love for her family are the legacy she leaves behind.
In keeping with Joyce's wishes, no graveside services will be held. Her family will gather privately for a Celebration of Life to honor her memory, sharing stories, laughter, and the love she gave so freely throughout her 91 remarkable years.
The family respectfully requests that those wishing to honor Joyce's memory consider making a memorial contribution to the American Cancer Society in her memory.
A mother's love never truly leaves us. It lives in the lessons she taught, the traditions she created, the laughter she shared, and the love that forever remains in the hearts of her family. Though she is gone from our sight, Joyce will always be with us in every cherished memory and every life she touched.
Forever loved. Forever remembered.
