Julie (Judy) Marie Barrows was born May 5th, 1940, in Kansas City Missouri to Edna Agness (Mary) Townsend and Robert J. Barrows. Julie passed away Friday, October 11, 2024, from pneumonia at Missouri University Hospital in Columbia at age 84. Julie was given a Catholic education and graduated from Loretta Academy in Eudora, Kansas in 1958. She later earned an associate’s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management in San Diego, California and managed a popular golf course in Santee, California. She had a thirst for learning, studying in many fields. Her occupational passion was accounting, leading her to a lifelong career at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in Kansas City Missouri, where she eventually earned a Certificate of Mastery in Tax Law. Julie retired after 30 years of service to the IRS, as a Tax Law Specialist.
Although Julie and her husband Garey recently retired to Lincoln, Missouri, Julie had the privilege of being well-traveled, moving for her husband’s military service, or her own career advancement. While she lived for a short while in San Diego, CA, Reno, NV, Urich, MO, and New Braunfels, TX, most of her years were spent in central Kansas. Julie had a huge heart and loved to help others in many capacities. Her public service activities included teaching summer school Arts and Crafts class; volunteering for the Toronto Sherriff’s Department as a dispatcher; serving as a Project Leader for 4-H teaching embroidery and crocheting; and she volunteered many hours in Tax Resolutions, assisting clients with their tax corrections and preparations. She also enjoyed preparing and serving meals at the Toronto Senior Center. Julie was very proud of her Native American Heritage, enrolling herself, children, and grandchildren in the Cherokee Register. She was an avid researcher and created a completed family tree for her family. Julie enjoyed writing and wrote a family history memoir for the O’Bannon family.
Julie was married from 1959 to 1970 to Russell Leroy Anderson, to which five children were born. Julie was married for 43 years to the love of her life, Garey M. O’Bannon, in 1981. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Robert Barrows, and one infant son, Guy Douglas Anderson. She is survived by her husband Garey O’Bannon, 84, of Lincoln, MO; Mr. Richard (Diane) Atchison, of Clinton, MO, and children Jason (Amber) Atchison and children Abigail, Gabirelle, Brody, and Cody; Holly Atchison and daughter Karlie; Amanda Atchison and children Remington and Garey Waylon; and Rick Atchison. Daughter, Dr. Kathryn Anderson of Clinton, MO, and children Ferris (William) May and children Iva, Svea, Isaiah, and Josiah; Stephen (Bree) Loyd and children Olivia and Avery; Laura (Christopher) Barnett and children Cohen and Walker; Mr. Raymond Arnold Anderson of Largo, FL; Mr. Kevin Leroy Anderson, of Centerville, KS, and children Eric Anderson; Brittany (John) Gilbert and son Corbyn; Austin Tyler Anderson, and son Easton; and Johnathan Monroe Anderson; step-daughter Rhonda Sue O’Bannon of Centerville, KS, and son Clark Shelton O’Bannon (Stephanie) and children Tristen, Virgil, Cashus, and Gemma; and Step-Son Rodney (Ann) O’Bannon of Calhoun, MO.
