Milfred Samuel Smiley, 96, of Pleasant Hill, was born, January 16, 1920, in Versailles, Missouri, the son of Hugh W. and Blanche E. Wahlers Smiley. He departed this life May 17, 2016, at his home surrounded with love and family.
Milfred was a 1938 Versailles High School graduate.
He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran serving in the European Theatre of Operations and at the Battle of the Bulge.
On January 5, 1947, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Elizabeth Byler in Prairie Home, Missouri. She preceded him in death on December 7, 2008.
Milfred was employed as a security officer for Bendex retiring in the mid 1980’s. He also farmed until recent years. He enjoyed reading and working around the farm.
Milfred was also preceded in death by his son, Robert Smiley on September 19, 2012; his brother Hugh W. Smiley; and two sisters, Lorena Housworth and Louella M. Byler.
He is survived by two granddaughters, Janelle (and Zachary) Gould of Pleasant Hill, and Emilee Walker of Kansas; one great granddaughter, Paisley Gould and his beloved niece and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 21, 2016, at the Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Pastor Richard Cook will officiate. Graveside military services and interment will follow in the Lone Jack Cemetery with full military honors by the U.S. Army and the V.F.W. Post #3118 Honor guard. Casket bearers are Greg Anderson, Hunter Anderson, Robert Conoway, Zachary Gould, Fred Smiley, and Daniel Yeager.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Village Hospice and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
