Raymond Eugene “Skip” Schrock, a lifelong musician, dedicated public servant, and cherished family member, passed away in Holts Summit, Missouri surrounded by family on June 16, 2026.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Skip was the son of Raymond Eugene Schrock and Shirley Jean (Eckart) Schrock Burton. He graduated from Jefferson City High School (JCHS) and New Mexico State University, where his love for music blossomed.
Skip’s early career combined his passion for music and education, serving as Assistant to the Jefferson City High School Band Director and directing the JCHS Jazz Ensemble and Beginning Band at Simonsen Junior High in Jefferson City, Missouri. He also taught band at Orchard Farm School District in St. Charles County, Missouri. Transitioning into public service, Skip worked with the Missouri Department of Revenue and then held key roles within the Governor’s offices of the late Mel Carnahan and Roger Wilson, including Assistant Scheduler, Director of Constituent Services and Assistant to the Governor. He further extended his service to the state by working in Washington, D.C. as the Director of Correspondence for the late Senator Jean Carnahan. Later, he worked for the Missouri Democratic Party and Kansas City non-profit organization where he campaigned for causes close to his heart. Skip ended his political career to move home to take care of his mother and stepfather. During this time, he started his final career with the Garden City Water Department.
Skip’s devotion to music remained constant throughout his life. An accomplished alto saxophonist, he played in numerous ensembles, including the River City Saxes Quintet, the Little Theatre of Jefferson City orchestra, Capital City Productions orchestra where he served as Artistic Director, ffortissiMO KC’s Loud and Proud Band, and the Mid America Freedom Band, where he served as Artistic Director and Vice President.
He is survived by his brother Greg (Penny) Schrock, sister Jeanna (John) Jackson, step brothers, Dan Burton, David Helverson, Allen Helverson, Lyle (Tricia) Burton; step sister Mary Young, nieces Jessica (Brian) Hick, Carla Case, Robin (Jimmy Gil) Jackson, grand nieces and nephews Eva Hick, Brody and Leo Case, and Elaina Jackson, uncle Jim (Sylva) Eckart, many cousins, friends, and his loyal companion Lucky. He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond Schrock and Shirley Burton, stepfather Jerry Burton, step brother Aaron Burton, and grandparents Claire and Mollie Eckart, and John and Margaret Schrock.
A celebration of Skip’s life will be held at a later date.
Skip’s legacy of music, public service, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
