Ret. US Navy ACCM Ronald E. Benton

Ret. US Navy Air Control Chief Master Ronald Eugene Benton departed this life on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at his home at the age of 84 years. He was born on July 27, 1931 in St. Joseph, Missouri the son of George Ivan and Geneva Laverne (Caldwell) Benton.

In 1939, his family relocated to Lincolnville, Kansas where his father entered the ministry of the Evangelical Church. Later in 1946, they moved to Hiawatha, Kansas where he graduated from high school. Ronald attended one year of college at Westmar College in Lemars, Iowa.

In January of 1951, Ronald enlisted in the US Navy and served for 30 years. During his service, he served at the following duty stations: N.T.C. Great Lakes, Illinois, N.A.S. Monterey, California, N.A.S. Cubit Pt. Philippines, N.A.S. Olathe, Kansas, N.A.S. Adak, Alaska, USS Coral Sea, CVA43, N.A.S. Moffett Field, California, N.A.S. Meridian, Mississippi. Ronald was awarded the following ribbons and commendations: Navy Achievement Medal (Coral Sea), Navy Unit Commendation (Vietnam Imployed), Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Ribbon.

On September 5, 1958, Ronald was united in marriage to Florence Icedore Crose of Bosworth, Missouri. In 1994, they moved to Harrisonville, Missouri and later, he moved to Raymore, Missouri until his death.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Icedore Benton on March 18, 2002 and a brother, Ivan Laverne Benton.

He is survived by a step-daughter, Rebecca Susan Gibbs and husband Darrell, Raymore, Missouri; 3 grandchildren, Ronald Gibbs and wife Cheryl, Dori Nicoll and husband Scott all of Kansas City, Missouri, Stephen Gibbs and wife Angie, Leawood, Kansas; 10 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Benton and wife Deanne, Lawrence, Kansas; other relatives and friends.

Cremation. A Celebration of Life Service was held Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Missouri.

A Memorial Graveside Service was held Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the Wharton Cemetery, Bosworth, Missouri with Military Rites provided by the US Navy Honor Guard.

Family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. Services are under the direction of Cass County Cremation Services, Harrisonville, Missouri.
