Steve L. Nelson, 63, of San Jose, California, passed away unexpectedly on April 3, 2026.
Steve was born on April 18, 1962, in Inkster, Michigan, to Dennis and Barbara Nelson. As their firstborn, he was the oldest brother to Jeff Nelson and Terri Workman (Nelson). At a young age, his family relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, where he grew up surrounded by family and lifelong friends.
Steve was the definition of a free spirit. He danced to the beat of his own drum and lived fully in the present, finding joy in the little things. A resilient and independent thinker, he valued his personal freedom and approached life with curiosity and intuition. He never met a stranger—his infectious smile and natural charm drew people in, forming friendships from coast to coast. Steve had a unique way of helping others open up, laugh, and embrace life. No matter the situation, he had a gift for turning life’s lemons into lemonade, always choosing optimism and possibility.
Although Steve took an unconventional path, he built a life filled with meaningful accomplishments. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany. Upon returning home, he met Paula, and the two were married on December 31, 1983. Together they welcomed two daughters. Later in life, Steve was blessed with two sons. Above all, he treasured his children and the time he spent with them.
Steve furthered his education at Heart of the Ozarks Community College, where he studied industrial welding. In 1995, he entered the Ironworkers Apprenticeship Program, which he successfully completed in August of 1999. He carried a strong work ethic and took pride in his craft.
A man of many interests, Steve had a passion for both the arts and problem-solving. He could shift effortlessly from working with his hands to writing poetry, reflecting the depth and creativity within him. His life was full, vibrant, and uniquely his own.
Steve was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; his aunt; and other loved ones who welcomed him home.
He is survived by his loving parents, children, brother and sister along with many extended family members and friends.
Above all else, Steve will be remembered for the light, laughter, and authenticity he brought into the lives of those who knew him.
